So the better you can cool the copper the better results you will get. Most of the heat displacement and cooling takes place on the copper heatpipes. Honestly, heat is very rarely going to make it to the edge of fins. Having an open fin design will help with keeping other components cool though. You may think I am crazy but I have taped the sides of my cooler before so every bit of air was pushed passed the heat pipes. The more of either, will increase the capabilities of the cooler. How much of it is there, Does it directly contact the CPU? These two thing can greatly effect the cooling capabilities. Cooper, the most thermal conductive material on an Air cooler. I know that sounds bad but when you have seen and used so many different ones, you kind of get any idea of what will work or won’t. Just from looking them I can tell if an Air cooler is going to be good or not.
